DPI Calculator

Check whether your artwork is large enough for full-format wall printing

Three quick tools for anyone planning a mural or wall graphic: assess file quality, compute the maximum print size, or plan the resolution you need for a specific wall.

Check your file against a planned print size

Enter your file dimensions in pixels and the planned print size in centimetres. We compute the real DPI on both axes and tell you if it is enough for a wall.

How to read the result

What is DPI?

DPI (dots per inch) is the number of print dots per inch. The higher the DPI, the sharper the print up close. Offset photos held in hand use 300 DPI, but for wall printing that is overkill.

Why our result can look "worse"

Many calculators compute DPI from the width only – if the file and print aspect ratios differ they overstate the result. We always show the limiting (worse) axis plus a separate aspect-ratio warning, so nothing surprises you on the wall.

DPI Range Irregular, multi-colour graphics (no fine detail) Graphics with sharp edges and fine detail
≥100 DPI Excellent result. No visible pixels even from 10 cm away from the wall. Important note: Above 100 DPI. The visual result on the wall is practically the same as at 100 DPI – this applies to both types of graphics (detailed and irregular alike). There is little point in artificially increasing the image resolution above 100 DPI, because the human eye will no longer catch the difference in print quality (especially from more than 1 m away), and it will only needlessly increase the size and "weight" of the graphic file.
100 DPI Excellent result. No visible pixels even from 10 cm away from the wall.
≥72 DPI From just 50 cm away the graphic looks very smooth. From 30 cm away faint pixels are visible and fine details lose intensity. Beyond 50 cm the result is acceptable.
≥50 DPI From 1 metre away the graphic looks smooth. The result on the wall will be satisfactory when viewed from a greater distance of more than 1 m. From 1.5 metres away pixels are visible. Details (especially elements under 2 cm tall) look washed out and lose intensity. Beyond 1.5 m the result is acceptable.
≥25 DPI From more than 3 metres away the print is acceptable. From a closer distance the image will be clearly pixelated. Pixels are visible even from 3 metres away. All fine elements are heavily pixelated, washed out and lacking intensity.
<25 DPI Not suitable for printing. Pixels will be clearly visible even from 5 metres away. Not suitable for printing. Pixels visible from 5 metres away. Fine details will be completely blurred and illegible.
